As one of New Jersey’s top wedding photographers at Delgado Studios, I’ve had the honor of capturing some of life’s most unforgettable moments. Few sessions compare to the excitement and raw emotion of a surprise proposal, and Kevin and Deanna’s day was a perfect example of why I love this type of work. Their surprise proposal at Deep Cut Gardens was filled with beauty, family, and a love story that will be remembered for years to come.
Deep Cut Gardens, located in Middletown, NJ, is one of my favorite spots for photography. Known for its stunning staircases, elegant flower beds, and peaceful greenery, it’s a location that feels timeless in every season. When Kevin reached out to me about documenting his proposal to Deanna, I knew that Deep Cut would provide the perfect setting. Its romantic pathways and breathtaking gardens created an atmosphere that was both intimate and grand.
The big moment unfolded at the bottom of the iconic staircase inside the garden. Deanna walked down, unaware of what was about to happen. Waiting for her at the base, Kevin had arranged for their families to create a setup that was both simple and elegant—white roses carefully placed at the bottom of the stairs. The detail added a soft, romantic touch to the moment, and as Deanna reached the last step, Kevin dropped to one knee. Her reaction was pure joy—tears, laughter, and the kind of genuine surprise that makes these sessions so powerful.
Being able to photograph a surprise proposal at Deep Cut Gardens is always special, but what struck me most about Kevin and Deanna’s was how seamlessly their families were involved. Both families had worked together to make sure the setup was meaningful and picture-perfect, and afterward, they were able to join in on the celebration. After the proposal, we spent time exploring the gardens for portraits of the newly engaged couple. Kevin and Deanna looked completely in their element, holding hands and smiling as we wandered through the grounds. Their love and excitement were contagious, and every corner of the garden seemed to reflect their energy.
We wrapped up the session with plenty of family photos. This was such an important part of the day because it allowed everyone who helped plan the proposal to be included in the memories. Group portraits in the gardens are always beautiful, but knowing these families were celebrating such a milestone together made it even more meaningful. These images will surely become keepsakes that will be cherished for generations.
